Update on Knaresborough Market
Statement from Knaresborough Town Council - 27 October 2025
Following the submission of a business case in July by Knaresborough Town Council (KTC) to North Yorkshire Council (NYC) to assume responsibility for the operation of Knaresborough’s weekly charter market, KTC is pleased to confirm that on Tuesday, 21 October, representatives of the NYC Executive met and unanimously agreed to the transfer of the market’s management and operation to KTC.
This decision marks a significant and positive milestone in the process towards local management of the historic market. However, there remains a considerable amount of detailed work to be completed to ensure a smooth and successful transfer.
KTC staff and councillors have been working tirelessly and will continue to do so over the coming months as negotiations and preparations progress between KTC and NYC. These discussions will focus on the essential operational details and infrastructure arrangements needed to support a sustainable, thriving market for years to come.
Knaresborough Town Council remains fully committed to achieving the best possible outcome for both the market and the wider community, ensuring that this much-loved local institution continues to serve residents, traders, and visitors at the heart of our town.
