Knaresborough Town Council formed a working group some time ago to look into ways to promote the castle at Knaresborough and one idea from the group was to enhance the castle by use of LED floodlights.
During the summer of 2017 a company did a temporary lighting scheme showing the beauty of the castle when floodlit.
The castle is a historic monument, under the control of Harrogate Borough Council, which was consulted throughout the whole process. The castle is leased from the Duchy of Lancaster; Historic England were approached for Scheduled Monument Consent.
The Town Council appointed a specialist consultant to assist with this important project and he worked closely with the town council and HBC officers to bring this scheme to fruition. The scheme has benefited from a £20,000 grant from Harrogate Borough Council's District Improvement Fund and this was matched by local fundraising.
The Castle lighting has been a huge success. There is now an interpretation board situated by the Castle to explain the various colour schemes in operation.
