Knaresborough Market Update
Letter sent to Stallholders from North Yorkshire Council on 19 June 2025:
"Provision of Market Stalls at Knaresborough and Ripon Markets
I am
writing to update you on the provision of market stalls at Knaresborough and Ripon market.
Firstly, can I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in trading at the markets. It is great to see so many traders over the last few weeks.
As I am sure you are aware, North Yorkshire Council made the difficult but necessary decision to cease the subsidised stall set-up service at Knaresborough and Ripon charter markets in December 2024. However, implementation was deferred until this summer to allow the respective parish councils time to develop proposals for the potential devolution of market operations. I’m pleased to confirm that a business case for the devolution of Knaresborough Market will be submitted to the Executive for consideration in the autumn (either September or October).
To ensure a smooth transition, a decision has been made to ensure no changes will be made to the current stall set-up arrangements until then.
We understand that the proposals are different to those originally agreed however we hope this is welcomed news as we continue to work closely with the Town and City Council.
To confirm North Yorkshire Council will continue erecting the stalls until September 2025."
Knaresborough Town Council will continue to work with NYC to progress the potential transfer of the management of the chartered market, and we will share updates as progress and decisions are made.
