TOWN TWINNING BETWEEN KNARESBOROUGH, NORTH YORKSHIRE

AND

THE CITY OF VOLODYMYR, UKRAINE

Today the Mayor of Knaresborough, Councillor Hannah Gostlow, has signed a Town Twinning Agreement between Knaresborough and Volodymyr, Volyn region in the Ukraine.

The two towns have ‘solemnly declared that they wish to be united with one another in lasting partnership and have pledged to foster close friendly contact with one another and when peace is established, to encourage the interchange of representatives of their younger community members, of schools, of culture and other associations, to exchange ideas and to take their stand for peace and the well-being of their citizens’.

This Agreement does not in any way deter from or alter the Town Twinning relationship which Knaresborough already has in place with Bebra in Germany, which has recently celebrated being in place for over 50 years.

The initial approach for Knaresborough Town Council to consider Knaresborough twinning with Volodymyr in Ukraine was made earlier this year by Mr Bob Frendt who had regularly visited the city in Ukraine delivering much needed aid and supplies.

Later this week Mr Frendt and his colleague, accompanied by Councillor David Goode, are leaving Knaresborough to drive to Ukraine to deliver two fire engines to the city of Volodymyr. They will take the signed copy of the Town Twinning Agreement with them for the Mayor of Volodymyr to add his signature.

Both Knaresborough and Volodymyr look forward to more peaceful times when exchange visits can become a reality for those who wish to be involved.
