Knaresborough Town Council Welcomes Collaborative Shadow Period Ahead of Market Handover

Published: 13 August 2026

Knaresborough Town Council (KTC) is delighted to be working closely with North Yorkshire Council (NYC) during a four‑week shadow period covering the operation of Knaresborough Market, ahead of the long‑awaited handover anticipated for September.

Throughout this period, Cllr James Pickard, Town Development Manager Mark Brayshaw, and the Town Ranger Oliver have been actively involved on site, gaining first‑hand experience of market operations and supporting the smooth running of the weekly market. From 5am, Cllr Pickard and Oliver have been helping traders set up their stalls, while Mark has been working alongside the current Market Manager to understand day‑to‑day processes and ensure continuity. KTC is grateful to NYC officers for their collaboration, guidance, and openness during this transition.

As the handover approaches, KTC is looking ahead with optimism. Bringing the Market back under local stewardship represents an exciting opportunity to strengthen its role at the heart of the community — supporting traders, attracting visitors, and celebrating Knaresborough's identity.

KTC is committed to working with the local community, business community and traders to ensure the Market continues to thrive for years to come.
